Easter: No Competition for Halloween

Easter is not my boys' favorite holiday. They have a strange fascination with Halloween, and Christmas is a close second (for obvious reasons). They are boys through-and-through; they love the creepy and crawly things. They enjoy monsters and blood.
Instilling a love for the Savior is extremely important to my husband and me. We want our boys to grow knowing God and His purpose for them.
There is a lot of pressure with this! Making sure we are encouraging and not pressuring. Answering questions with empathy and understanding, not judgment and apathy.
And when my boys choose to sing a verse from The Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack instead of a popular hymn, I have to remind myself it doesn't mean they don't listen in church. Although it is super awkward to explain to the Sunday School nursery teacher your kid is singing "I am the clown with a tear-away face" in a positive way.
Yesterday, Levi and I were walking through the grocery store when he spotted the Easter goodies. Brightly colored eggs (my boys call these "surprise eggs"), chocolate of every variety, baskets, and a few fluffy toys covered a corner aisle.
I thought Levi would be distracted by the chocolate, but my sweet boy surprised me in the best way.
"Mom, do you remember Easter? Do you remember when Jesus died on the cross for you?"
Is it cool to cry next to Sara Lee? Levi continued, "That was good. He did a good thing."
Yes, my boys may enjoy Halloween festivities more, but they are learning there is no competition when it comes to the importance of Easter.
These kids have a heart that yearns for the Lord. Showing the tools -- prayer, the Bible, church family -- for feeding this thirst for the Lord is one of the most exciting things about being a Christian parent.
